The second edition of the Tulum International Film Festival (FICTU) is back and will take place from August 4 to 8, 2021. In order to disseminate the best national and international film productions and reactivate film screenings in the State from Quintana Roo, the festival will privilege outdoor exhibitions and will follow a strict protocol to avoid Covid-19 infections.

As in its previous edition –which took place in 2019– the FICTU will be made up of four sections: Horizonte –a sample of the most outstanding national cinema in recent years–; Hemisphere - a selection of films that explore (sometimes directly, sometimes diagonally) the most pressing issues of our times, such as the climate crisis, justice, representation issues, and social inequality; Púlsar –a set of the most daring films that invite us to question the structures and ideas of our environment; films that challenge the conventions of cinematographic language– and Sidereal –our gala section: films made by directors celebrated worldwide or with the most recognizable casts. In this second edition, the festival maintains its mission of reaching the Mayan communities of the State by showing films subtitled in Spanish and with the possibility of being listened to in Mayan through headphones.

The FICTU is possible thanks to the impulse of the governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, and the vision of the director of the Tourism Promotion Council, Darío Flota Ocampo, who recognize the importance of the cinematographic exhibition to promote cultural activities in the community and reactivate the economy as soon as possible after the pandemic that started in 2020.

Under the direction of Paula Chaurand, the festival seeks to make a selection of outstanding and conscientious films that represent the multitude of voices in contemporary cinema. The programming team - led by Chloë Roddick - has chosen titles from various genres and styles, paying special attention to marginalized looks to give them visibility.

The FICTU takes on the challenge of becoming one of the benchmarks of the culture of the State of Quintana Roo by announcing a call to support filmmakers. FICTU Cometa –which will be published on May 4– has the objective of promoting films that are in the production or post-production process. It awards a prize of 200,000 pesos for fiction or documentary films whose locations are developed between 60 and 100 percent in Quintana Roo. In addition, it seeks to promote the cinematographic production of the State and highlight its impressive landscapes to project them nationally and internationally, as well as stimulate the local audiovisual industry in an organized and systematic way.

A few weeks before the festival begins, the details of FICTU Studio will be announced, an initiative to professionalize directors, producers and creators –mainly from Quintana Roo interested in producing films in the State– through workshops that allow them to learn how to prepare and present their film projects.

The Tulum International Film Festival invites local and foreign audiences, as well as the media, to join this community that celebrates cinema as a cultural and artistic experience. We are waiting for you from August 4 to 8 in the State of Quintana Roo!
